Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

SEO is such a big field that most of the time, mistakes are bound to happen even to the most cautious people. In eCommerce, people would want to save so much time building their catalog that they end up doing a lot of mistakes on SEO. Sure, there might be thousands of products inside it but there might also be thousands of SEO mistakes as well.

One of the most common mistakes in eCommerce websites is the failure to change the description of the product. Most often than not, eCommerce sites uses the same description like in the manufacturer website. This doesn’t only create unnecessary competitions but also creates duplicate contents. The last thing an eCommerce site needs is some penalties from search engines due to duplicate contents.

Refrain from doing copy and paste jobs. In the long run, it will surely help with the overall SEO of the website. It lowers the competition and also makes the site looks unique in the eyes of the search engines as well.

The next mistake is that these sites reveal too much about their products. Some of this information may lead the customers into buying the product from other websites. Others may cause competitors to see information that isn’t supposed to be revealed. A good example is the amount of stock at hand.

Competitors may keep track of how many products are being sold by the website and whether it is a success or not. Competitors may decide to sell the best selling products on their website at a lower cost instead which will make the ecommerce site lose profits as well. There should be a fine line between what to reveal and what to be kept concealed.
